Popcorn & Pop Music

"Popcorn and pop music have a place in your life. They in the background. In the foreground you have work, home, wife and all that. So the effort you put into buying pop music should not be more than the effort you put into buying popcorn."

Finally I am on facebook

God ! this has haunted me for so long.

I was just going through some nerdy stuff like how to make facebook apps (people make it sound simpler than it is for someone who hasn't coded in years). The tutorial video started promising as well but pretty soon the guy was coding all over the place.

Somewhere along the way I realized I am not even there. So I guess I still have a few runs to complete before I make a cute lil app. But today's work is done.

Robin Williams

If Robin Williams ever took an IQ test, I am sure he crossed 175. The first time I realized how funny this guy was when I was watching him on Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

This weekend I went hunting for that show on youtube. I didn't quite find the clip but I saw so many other videos .. it has made for a perfect couch potato weekend.

Personal DNA Analysis: 23AndMe

Sergey Brin's Blog talks about 23andme - a startup in Personal DNA Analysis. The first time I realized that such a thing was possible was in a movie .. can't remember the name. But a girl takes his and a potential suitors saliva samples (or was it hair) and gets to %compatibility. That was an AHA moment for me. But this is even better, IT's REALLY HAPPENING .. I thought we were a few decades away.

While 23andme doesn't offer any such service so far, they come pretty close.

Makes me wonder again about the power of technology. By identifying one's probability of getting a particular decease, even imprecisely, you can give that person a chance for an early intervention / prevention so as to reduce the odds. A huge value addition that enables us to preserve and make better use the most critical resource at hand - human capital.

I used to be a Software Engineer .. and one of the first lessons I learnt a Cisco was that a 'bug' discovered later (let's say close to release) costs 10x more to fix than the one discovered early (let's say close to unit testing).

This is the same thing applied to human beings .. and I am guessing the magnitude of saving is much higher - taking into account that humans feel and software doesn't.

So rock on 23andMe. May you (and your competitors) succeed in your goals in making this world a better place.

These Streets..

WOW !!!
This guy is something. Full lyrics of These Streets here

Take me wondering through these streets,Where bright lights and angels meet ..

Heard New Shoes for the first time on radio on way to work and I really liked it. Great music and interesting lyrics.
Then I saw that Puma is using the same song for their new ad ... HAD to look it up.
Apparently, it's from an scottish artist Paolo Nutini. I dont know much about music but it's easy to see why this song is so popular.

The Great Sun.

So with nanosolar having hit the grid parity on solar, it's only a matter of time before the world starts to get meaningful share of it's energy needs from my personal favorite of energy source .. The Great Sun.
When I was a kid - my pa told me about the solar streetlight installation in the village - where I grandpa had a shop. It was apparently not very effective - but that was then .. and what have we now -
With such technology we can create a grid connected solar farm - which in capital investments will cost no more than creating a coal based plant. Plus no fuel will be burnt, very little opex will be required .. less people, less pollution .. . only downside - A large area will be required.
How large - lets see. The Great Sun gives 1000 Watt per square meter. Nanosolar is claiming 17% efficiency but some bloggers won't buy that .. they say 14% .. so thats 140 Watts/sq meter of solar installation ...
Thats 7 square km for a 1000 MW Plant. I am sure that's VERY BIG compared to a coal plant. But I would still do it.
Hope I can muster the guts to import stuff from nanosolar and create a put together - may be a smaller installation - in Rajasthan ... Moser Baer - Beware.
